The Nebraska City varsity softball team moved to 5-0 on the season with a hotly contested win over their Trailblazer Conference foes the Ralston Rams. The Pioneer Junior Varsity team also got the win improving their record to 2-0.
With both teams battling the extreme heat, the Rams jumped out early scoring three runs in the first inning, but the Pioneers battled back to tie the game. Going into the fourth with the game tied at 4, Junior Bianca Hoy singled on the first pitch of her at bat scoring the winning run. Senior Kendyl Schmitz picked up the win for Pioneers. Schmitz lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out six. Wagner took the loss for the Rams. The hurler surrendered five runs on eight hits over seven innings, striking out six. Emma Cowden went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Nebraska City Varsity Pioneers in hits. The Pioneers didn't commit a single error in the field led by a solid effort from Sydnee Nickels handling five hits. Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to Syracuse for the eight team Syracuse Invitational. This year's tournament field includes Auburn, Yutan, Freeman, Wahoo, Cass County, and fellow Trailblazers the Plattsmouth Blue Devils. The Pioneers open up with the host Syracuse Rockets at 9:00 am.
