Waverly Invite
On Tuesday, the Pioneer Girls Golf Team traveled to a soggy Crooked Creek Golf Course for the Waverly Invite. The team finished 7th with a season low team score of 425. “Overall, we made some progress over the first week. We still need to get more consistent and eliminate the big numbers.” said Head Coach Scott Kinnison. After missing the first week with illness, the Pioneers welcomed back sophomore Grace McNeely to their lineup. McNeely came out firing and shot a career best 95 on the day to lead the Pioneers. Her score placed her 5th out of the 60 competitors. “We missed Grace the first two tournaments and it was nice to see her back. She really improved over the summer and showed it today.” said Kinnison. After leading the Pioneers the first two tournaments, junior Ella Welsh finished in 12th place with a 97. While her 97 is a good score, Welsh was not satisfied with it. “Ella was a little disappointed in her round. She is starting to realize that she is capable of shooting some low numbers if she can stay positive during her rounds.” said Kinnison. Next on the card was senior Grace Easley as she carded a 105. Similar to other other rounds this season, Easley had one good nine and one higher nine. “Grace is playing better than last year but isn’t satisfied with her scores. She is really working hard to break 100 on a regular basis and I know she will get there soon.” said Kinnison Fourth on the card was Isabelle Johnson. The freshman finished with a 127. “Isabelle is going to have some growing pains during the year. This is the first time she has seen some courses and so it's natural to struggle a bit. I was surprised at her score after watching her. She hit the ball off the tee better than she scored.” said Kinnison. The final Pioneer was Gabby Chance. The senior had a tale of two nines as well. Her front nine was a 58 but Chance struggled on her back nine and finished with an 80, for a 138. “Gabby’s front was her lowest competitive nine hole score. Unfortunately, she lost her swing on the back and struggled. As she continues to develop, she makes our team more competitive.” added Kinnison. The Pioneers will be in action twice this week with a Tuesday triangular against Waverly and Norris at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln and then a visit Thursday to Bay Hills in Plattsmouth for the Plattsmouth Invitational.
