The Girls Golf Team opened the season last week to mixed reviews at the Beatrice and Seward Invitationals. The team finished 6th at Beatrice with a team score of 481 and 7th at Seward with a team score of 440.
“It was a mixed bag of results. It was helpful to see what we do well and on the other hand what areas we really need to work on.” said Head Coach Scott Kinnison. He also added that “it was nice to get our younger players in competitions early in the season so we can see how they react under tournament pressure. It was good to see our team score improve from the first meet to the second one. Hopefully, we will be back to full strength next week and we can get a better idea of what we are capable of as a team.” Ella Welsh led the Pioneers both days. The junior shot a 92 (50-42) at Beatrice and then followed that up with an 89 (41-48) at Seward. She placed 5th at both tournaments. “For early in the season, I thought those were outstanding rounds for her. She cut 25 and 32 shots off her scores from these same tournaments last year. The best thing is she can take a bunch of shots off her score.” said Kinnison. Senior Grace Easley was next on the card for the Pioneers. Her rounds of 112(63-49) and 105 (58-47) were similar. Kinnison stated, “Grace started both rounds with scores higher on the front nine than we would like but she kept competing and her scores really improved on the back nines. Just need to get her playing better.” Next on the card was freshman Isabelle Johnson. She started her Pioneer career with a 128 (69-59) and then a 111(58-53). “It was nice to see the progress she made in the week. Her nine hole scores kept coming down as the week went on.” Senior Gabby Chance’s score was the next one at both tournaments. She finished with rounds of 149 (69-80) and 135 (71-64). “I think by the end of the day Friday, Gabby found some things in her swing that will allow her to take strokes off her score as the season progresses.” Freshman Natalie Nelson rounded out the lineup with scores of 177 (88-89) and 150 (76-74). “I was really happy with her rounds. Experience in competition was our main goal for her this season. Once she plays a little more, her score will reflect the effort she is putting in.” The Pioneers will be back in action at the Waverly Invite on Tuesday.

This year’s Pioneer Girls Golf Team looks to continue the high level of play they have achieved the past two years. With three golfers returning from last year’s state tournament team, the Pioneers appear ready to make a run at a third straight state appearance. “The girls put in a lot of work this summer in order to be ready for the season. The success the last couple of years is something they are aware of and it's a tradition they want to continue.” said Head Coach Scott Kinnison, who is back leading the Pioneers for the 16th year. Returning varsity players are junior Ella Welsh, senior Grace Easley, and sophomore Grace McNeely. “All three of them have improved from last year, so I’m excited for us to start competing again and see what they do this year,” said Kinnison. “I’m also excited for senior Gabby Chance, who has played all 4 years, and has improved her game every year.” Two new players joined the team this fall. Freshmen Isabelle Johnson and Natalie Nelson. Kinnison said, “Both will have to get used to playing competitive golf, but I think both have bright futures.” The Pioneers open their season at the Beatrice Invite on |
