The Pioneer volleyball team entered more uncharted territory on Thursday night as they swept an opponent at home for the first time in at least four years. The Pioneers started a bit shaky in the match, but it didn’t take long for them to gain control.
The first set featured a bit of a comeback, but the Pioneers were able to take control of the set midway through and earn a 25-20 victory. The second set brought the crowd to their feet on numerous occasions as it was a back and forth display. The Pioneers gained the lead at 22-21, but the Bluejays would battle back to tie the game at 25-25. The Pioneers earned the final two points for a 27-25 set two win. The final set of the night saw the Pioneers easily control the Bluejays through the set until a 24-18 lead was cut to a 24-23 lead before a Pioneer timeout. The Bluejays would miss the next serve to give the Pioneers the sweep. Junior, Brooke Thorne, had a career night as she tallied 12 kills in the match on 25 swings. Halle Thompson complimented Thorne’s performance with 10 kills. Thompson also kept the Bluejays out of sorts with 8 of the Pioneer’s 13 service aces. Casey Smith had a season high 27 assists, while Laney Denniston received 24 Bluejays serves with no errors. The Pioneers improved to 3-2 on the season and will have a week to prepare for a second meeting with Seward next Thursday, September 8th on their home court. The Pioneer Volleyball team found themselves in some unfamiliar territory on Saturday at the Plattsmouth Tournament, but Coach Kuntz and the rest of the Pioneers had been waiting for the opportunity. “Winning the first game of the day and going to the winner’s bracket is a small step in showing competitiveness and improvement in our entire program,” Coach Kuntz noted about their opening round victory over Raymond Central.
