The Nebraska City boys and girls cross country teams competed at the class B district 1 meet on Thursday October 14th at Platteview High School. Both boys and girls teams competed exceptionally well on what turned out to be a great day of weather for a high school cross country meet. The highlight of the day for the Pioneers came on the boys side of the competition which saw the team of Mason Houghton, Alex Rico, Hayden Beccard, Sabir Musa, Sage Mclaren, and Jeremy Polanco qualify as a team for state for the first time since the 1991 season. The Pioneers needed to finish in the top three of team scoring to qualify, and were able to edge out Plattsmouth for 2nd place, marking the first time in the 2021 campaign that they were able to beat the Blue Devils. In team scoring Skutt Catholic outpaced the field for first place with 10, Nebraska City 49, Plattesmouth 53, Elkhorn 60, Platteview 81, and Ralston rounded out the scoring with 99. Individually Mason Houghton led the effort for the Pioneers finishing 8th with time of 17:27, Alex Rico 10th at 17:34, Hayden Beccard 14th 18:09, and Sabir Musa rounded out the scoring with a 17th place finish in a time of 18:34. The Pioneers will rest up, and get ready to compete at the state meet to be held at Kearney Country Club on Friday, October 22nd
