The Nebraska City Cross Country Team competed at the Clarinda Invitational on yet another hot, humid day. A nice breeze from the south-southeast brought moments of relief to the athletes as a lot of the course was very spread out and in open spaces. This meet featured some of the same challenges as the Auburn meet two weeks ago; hills, heat, and a little less Humidity.
The girls’ team finished 3rd out of 8 as a team. Atlantic (Iowa) was the team champion for the girls. The top 4 Nebraska City girls’ were closely packed together finishing within 2:00 of each other. Placing 7th overall, for Nebraska City was Senior Evie Madison in a time of 23:31.75. Freshman Josslyn Crispin came close to a medal in 18th place with a time of 25:28.81. Finishing second for the team and having a breakout race was Freshman Josslyn Crispin. Crispin finished in 9th place overall with a time of 23:45.38.. Junior Malayna Madsen finished in 13th place in a time of 24:58.83. 16th overall, was freshman Alex Meyer in a time of 25:29.87. The top 4 girls’ will all receive medals for their outstanding efforts. The final finisher for Nebraska City was Senior Caroline Gay in 30:34.64. This was Gay’s best effort on this tough Clarinda course and her second best race this season. For the boys’ team race, Clarinda came out on top. Nebraska City finished 4th of 8 teams. Junior Mason Houghton ran a very calculated race to finish strong in the final mile to overtake Riley Blay from Nodaway Valley (Iowa). Houghton was comfortable in 2nd place through the 2 mile mark and fought with Blay the next 1⁄2 mile before a dominating kick up the final hill allowed him to take command of the race and never look back. His winning time was 16:56.17. This is his 2nd sub-17 minute performance of the year.. Rounding out the medalists for Nebraska City were Senior Alex Rico in a time of 18:49.31; placing 6th, and Freshman Jonathan Rico, placing 7th, in a time of 19:23.62. Senior Abrahan Cortez, placed 36th in a time of 22:46.64. Fellow Seniors Matteo Rodriguez and Jeremy Polanco finished the team scoring in 42nd and 49th places with times of 23:11.96 and 24:13.58 respectively. Lourdes Freshman Drue Weeda finished in 54th place with a time of 25:05.49. Sophomore Eddy Pro finished in 57st place with a time of 25:18.96. Nick Fedoris finished with a time of 26:06.57 in 61st place. Three middle school runners participated in the 3000m race for Nebraska City. 7th graders Julian Rodriguez, Rhys Reimers, and Jack Vasser ran amazing races for the longest distance of the year. Reimers led the team in 17th place with a time of 14:02.25; this was faster than his 2400m time at Auburn. Rodriguez finished in 18th place with a time of 14:13.15, and Vasser finished in 34th place with a time of 18:02.12. There were 40 athletes in the Boys’ race. Nebraska City Cross Country is in action next week at the Bennington Invitational Thursday, September 15th. The first race begins at 3:30 PM.

The Nebraska City Cross Country Team competed at the Auburn Invitational on a hot, humid August 25th. The brief rain shower in the morning did no favors for the weather. Luckily, no favors were needed for the outstanding performances across the board from the NCXC athletes.
